The Beatles: Ringo Starr and the Drums

The Beatles is one of the most overrated yet underrated bands, it is a status that is very confusing. Paul McCartney, is one of the most underrated bass player in the industry, only a few notice his melodic Bass Playing. Ringo Starr is like Paul McCartney, left-handed and underrated. Ringo StarrÂ’s singing skills may not be underrated but his drumming skills are far superb, many drummers aspire to achieve his style of playing. Even a non-drummer can appreciate his drumming. Ringo Starr not only plays the drums for the band but acts like percussion and a melodic accompaniment.

The Beatles is one of the most overrated yet underrated bands, it is a status that is very confusing. Paul McCartney, is one of the most underrated bass player in the industry, only a few notice his melodic Bass Playing. Ringo Starr is like Paul McCartney (Beatles member), left-handed and underrated. Ringo Starr’s singing skills may not be underrated but his drumming skills are far superb, many drummers aspire to achieve his style of playing the drums. Even a non-drummer can appreciate the technicality of his drumming. Ringo Starr not only plays the drums for the Beatles but acts like percussion and a melodic accompaniment making the most out of the drums.

“Phil Collins, drummer for Genesis -- "I think he's [Ringo Starr] vastly underrated. The drum fills on A Day In The Life are very complex things. You could take a great drummer today and say, 'I want it like that.' They wouldn't know what to do." (interview for The Making of Sgt. Pepper, 1992) “

Here are notable tracks which show Ringo Starr’s ability as a drummer of the Beatles. Youtube Video covers are going to be used, since Ringo Starr doesn’t have videos where he played the drums alone (without the Beatles). We can use Youtube to see someone attempting to imitate Ringo Starr’s ability as a drummer. And for the sake of viewers these Beatles tracks are equalised so that the drums stand out. You won't consider underrated until you clearly hear Ringo Starr's drums.

I Feel Fine

The first time you hear this Beatles track you expect less of it because of its lyrics and the gimmick before it starts, however when the drums come out of nowhere, you could hear the drums and the backbeat Ringo Starr is providing, truly a Beatles Rocker. The execution of the drums in this track is very technical that even seasoned drummer drumming this will find it difficult.  Ringo Starr played the drums on this track on the live performances of the Beatles with the same style and endeavour. Just look how Ringo Starr played the cymbals:

A Day in the Life

An article of mine dedicated to the track mentioned how “awesome” the track is. Along with an unusual chord progression you can see how Ringo Starr played the drums as a “fill” instrument, many drummers try to achieve this kind of style. The track was left by The Beatles without the drums and Ringo Starr just went on a session alone and recorded the drums. Common people will not notice this but drummers will, and consider it vastly underrated.

Rain

The Beatles stopped touring in the year 1966, the same year they innovated many studio effects. Ringo Starr employed the swinging hi-hat style in the most underrated Beatles track ever: Rain. Rain has good bass and drums which are out of this world, few realise making it very underrated. Few Radio Stations play this Beatle track. Look how Ringo Starr played the drums in this track. Collaborated and Underrated Beatles effort.

 The Word

The title of the youtube video suffices for an underrated explanation; see how Ringo Starr used the swinging hi-hat here.

 She Said She Said

This Beatles track is rich with Ringo Starr’s way of filling songs. The hi-hat technique is still used later in the track; see how the tempo suddenly changed while maintaining a steady beat, keep in mind Ringo Starr is left handed when playing drums. Somehow when Paul McCartney plays good bass, Ringo Starr plays good drums.

 Octopus’s Garden

This is one of Ringo Starr’s original song in the Beatles, since this is his song we can hear the drums acting as part of the song itself:

 Tomorrow Never Knows

A very avant garde Beatles track, here Ringo Starr plays a very unusual drum pattern, simple and straightforward drums but very unique.

 Blue Jay Way

The drums may seem very boring at first, but notice the beats that come next. Ringo Starr played drum fills out of nowhere.

Strawberry Fields Forever

See the drummer play Ringo Starr as a one man drummer orchestra, excellent beats and fills. Any drummer would enjoy playing this Beatles track, it is very diverse.

Sexy Sadie

Pure Beatles genius and talent, excellent bass and drums.

The End

Ringo Starr’s only drum solo while in The Beatles.

These are just some highlights of Ringo Starr’s drum skills while in The Beatles, all of drum skills are superb, except for a few songs where he was tamed by the rest of the  Beatles. Live Performances of the Beatles are a must watch there we can see why Ringo Starr truly deserves to be in the Beatles, he is a monster drummer.

A good report on Beatles. thank you Gerard. Voted.

Well, you got me hung up on youtube and Ringo Starr now! Great topic, great presentation.

Good work Gerard, I enjoyed the way you spotlighted Ringo Starr.

Ringo also puts on fun concerts. I've seen him twice. He is very engaging with the audience and he always brings an entourage of other well known performers which makes for an excellent and entertaining show.

I don't know in what part of the world Paul is underrated as a bass player but in the US he is considered a god by the industry and musicians alike; the greatest bass played that ever lived.
