What It Means to Be a Beatle: Cirque Du Soleil and Love

Initially the brainstorm of George Harrison and Guy Laliberté, one of the founders of the world-famous Cirque du Soleil, the Beatle-inspired Love premiered in 2006 at The Mirage, in Las Vegas. Written and directed by Dominic Champagne, with executive producer credits going to Neil Aspinall (who died in 2008), concept creator credits go to Dominic Champagne and Gilles Ste-Croix (also a co-founder of Cirque), who is also credited as the director of creation along with Chantal Tremblay. George Martin (as well as son, Giles), are credited as music directors, both for the stage production as well as subsequent soundtrack, Love, released in November of 2006.

Evolving from a personal friendship and mutual admiration between George Harrison and Guy Laliberté, one of the founders of the world-famous Montreal-based entertainment troupe Cirque du Soleil, the Beatle-inspired Love premiered in 2006 at The Mirage, in Las Vegas.

Consisting of panoramic sound and fantastic visuals provided by a cast of 60 international artists, the Beatles’ music and legacy came to life through a new re-mastering and re-editing process of their original recordings, provided by their career-long friend, sound engineer and producer, Sir George Martin (assisted by his son, Giles Martin).

Although the idea for the project arose from discussions between George and Guy in 2000, it took three years of negotiations between Paul, Ringo, George’s widow Olivia (who represented George’s interests after his death in 2001), Yoko Ono (who represented John), The Beatles' holding company Apple Corps Ltd., and the MGM Mirage.  Ultimately a joint venture between Cirque and The Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd, it is the first production that Apple Corps Ltd. has been involved in.

Tickets went on sale for this unprecedented show on April 19, of 2006, with preview performances running from June 2 to June 29.  During these shows (including June 16 and 17 which Paul attended), changes were made nightly based on audience reaction; cutting or adding sections as needed.

In attendance at the gala opening on June 30 were Paul, Ringo, Yoko, Cynthia Lennon, John’s son Julian, Olivia, George’s son Dhani, and George Martin.  Quite appropriately (as if George had himself orchestrated it) it became the biggest reunion of The Beatles' family members since the band's demise.  At the end of the show, Paul, Ringo, Olivia, Yoko and Martin took to the stage, at which time Paul requested of the audience, "Just one special round of applause, for John and George!"

On June 26, 2007, the surviving members of The Beatles, as well as Olivia and Yoko met for the one-year anniversary of the show at The Mirage, where the Love show is staged.  Paul, Ringo, Olivia, and Yoko were interviewed by CNN's Larry King shortly before the show began.  At that time, the group unveiled a plaque to be placed at the Las Vegas Mirage in memory of John and George.  Paul later discussed the decision-making process on the Gayle King Show.

Still phenomenal trend-setters even forty years later, due to the incredible success of both the stage show and the album, audience reaction, and successful negotiating of Love, this paved the way for Viva Elvis (developed in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises), which began previews on December 18, 2009, and then Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, which began its tour October 2, 2011, in Montreal.

Thank you, my friend. I appreciate the continued readership and hope you're being sufficiently informed and properly entertained! .

Of course Dear James, I am always fascinated by your exceptional writings. May I ask you if faced any trouble before in publishing your work because I am facing a problem in uploading the images as well as saving the draft which disappear once it is saved.

Most certainly. I can only post videos--no images--and cannot preview what I post.

We're planning a trip to Las Vegas this year, and this is one of the shows that we might see. By the comments, I guess we're all having some problems publishing. I switched to Chrome once and was able to publish a product comparison that wouldn't publish, and I was able to download images. I use Chrome now on this site.

FYI, Sandy and anyone considering this: I too decided to try Chrome because of this user-unfriendly system and got a major bite on the ass. The day after downloading Chrome, I discovered that an especially aggressive virus had somehow attached itself to the download and completely seized control of my PC, costing me $85 to correct. It was a costly mistake I’ll never make again.
